POLLUTION AND SOLUTION
By School Admin
The contamination of natural resources through various pollutants is known as ‘Pollution'. Polluting nature means deceiving our mother Earth. Pollution is caused by human beings and it exposes a living being to various long-term diseases that include lung cancer, ischemic heart diseases, etc. Effects of pollution will worsen with time if one does not take initiative to reduce it.
According to a comparative report on polluted cities published in the Hindustan Times, Delhi in India is the most polluted city. Kolkata ranks fourth and Mumbai ranks sixth. The cities with the high AQI also include Lahore in Pakistan and Chengdu in China. From this report, we conclude that India is one of the most polluted countries which accounts for a 79.89 percent pollution rate.
Why? Is it because of the heedlessness of the people?
Is there any solution to stop pollution?
It is often said, everything in this world has a solution if one takes initiative to solve the problem. There is only one solution to stop pollution and that is its prevention. In the modern era, if we look around, we will find that we are enclosed by various technologies which reduce the workforce of the people. This makes them slothful to carry out any action and somewhere it results in pollution. For example, to cover a short distance, we prefer a car or a bike instead of walking. It results in Air Pollution, the most common one that has a drastic impact on the environment. We should walk or ride a bicycle for a shorter distance. There are some other measures also which can be taken to prevent air pollution.
● People burn leaves, trashes, and plastic stuff which releases harmful greenhouse gases. These gases contribute to air pollution and it results in global warming. Dustbins of green, blue, and yellow colour should be used for dumping the segregated waste.
● We should use fans instead of an air conditioner. An air conditioner requires electricity to function which results in air pollution, consequently, depletion in the ozone layer has been observed. The same case is of a refrigerator also which is a common household appliance. It is predicted that 25% of global warming will be caused by air pollution only.
● The use of renewable energy should be encouraged so that the emission of harmful and poisonous greenhouse gases from the industries can be reduced.
• Air pollution may be prevented by not using our vehicles too much on a daily basis. These days people make a pool drive to offices and colleges. In western countries, even the higher authorities use their bicycles to attend their offices or they walk. All these steps are highly appreciated as they retard the vehicle-caused pollution.
Additionally, Water Pollution is also one of the most common factors which affect human lives adversely. There are some measures to be employed through which water pollution can be prevented to some extent.
● Toxic industrial wastes should not be thrown into the water bodies because it results in the death of marine animals and disturbs the ecosystem.
● Sewage water treatment should be done before the sewage water is released into the water bodies.
● Another factor inducing water pollution caters to our religious rites. We, as a rule, immerse the statues of our deities in rivers and seas which pollute water. In recent times, people with good civic sense, use eco-friendly statues which are less harmful. Some people go a step further. They immerse the statue in their tubs and buckets and use the water for their plants. All these steps manage to lessen water pollution.
• While brushing our teeth, we must not continue the water to flow continuously from the tap. This will conserve water. We need to reserve water as every drop is precious.
“Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends have become a global garbage can.”
~Jacques Yves Cousteau
Natural contamination is a major concern now for every living being on this planet today. We are constantly adding polluting factors to the earth unintentionally through our dreadful and incautious actions. It produces several difficulties for each one of us and life becomes inexplicable. It is our moral obligation to live judiciously and save nature in all possible ways.
